This is the tricky part. Giving proper scavenger hunt clues can be really difficult, because they cannot be too difficult or too easy. Also, they should not have different possible outcomes. You have to choose what you are going to point towards.
You can point to a place where you have placed the next clue, or you can point to the thing around/inside which you have placed the clue. A popular way of giving a clue is to giving it in the form of a short poem or riddle. Also, you have to take into account your audience while designing the clue.
